What is Wheel Alignment?
Wheel alignment, or tyre alignment, refers to the angle of the wheel relative to the road and each other.
In normal circumstances, the wheels should be perpendicular (or at right angles) to the road surface and parallel to each other.
Over time, wheels can drift inwards or outwards or even tilt from the axle. Wheel alignment measures these discrepancies and performs corrective action according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Wheel Alignment Problems
Wheel alignment is measured along two axes: toe and camber.
Toe is the direction of the tyre. Toe-in occurs when the tyre points outwards, increasing the angle between the tyres. Toe out occurs when the tyre is pointing inwards.
Camber is the wheel’s angle relative to the road. A negative camber is when the tyre leans inward toward the car. Positive camber is when the tyre leans outward away from the car.
Any deviation from normal harms the vehicle’s suspension system, stability, and lifespan. It also causes uneven wear on the tyres and lowers fuel efficiency due to increased rolling resistance.
