How Puncture Repairs Work
Puncture repairs aren’t as simple as you might think. The tyre type, puncture location, and number of tyres can complicate the process. We start every repair by inspecting the tyre’s internal and external sections, looking for any sharp objects that have penetrated the rubber.
Slow punctures are particularly troublesome. Drivers may not notice the damage until it’s too late, increasing the risk of a flat tyre or, worse, a blowout.
Not all punctures can be repaired. If the puncture exhibits the following features, we advise getting the tyre replaced:
Puncture Location
According to the British Standard BSAU159, punctures located in the central tread are a minor repair.
Outside this region, it isn’t safe to repair the puncture, and a replacement tyre is needed.
In addition, run-flat tyres cannot be repaired, as the sidewalls have been reinforced. This prevents technicians from correctly assessing the damage but does lower the risk of blowouts.
