What is the Purpose of Washer Fluid?
Washer fluid is the liquid that’s sprayed onto the windscreen to keep the wipers free of obstructions. You might not think it’s important; however, washer fluid removes dirt, grime, bugs, and other debris from your windshield.
The last thing you need is a grimed-up windscreen when driving. Washer fluid contains detergents and antifreeze to clean the glass and protect against freezing.
Antifreeze vs. Washer Fluid: What’s the Difference?
Aren’t antifreeze and washer fluid the same?
No. While washer fluid does contain some elements to prevent it from freezing, antifreeze is solely for your engine. Otherwise known as glycol, it helps cool your engines, preventing overheating.
Washer fluid, on the other hand, is made from either ethanol or methanol. This prevents freezing and dissolves any grease on the windscreen. It’s why they’re usually called ‘non-residual de-greasers.’ Clever, right?
