What is a TPMS Check?
The tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is now a standard component of modern vehicles. Sensors located on each tyre monitor the pressure, alerting the driver if the pressure drops below 6-8 PSI. Usually, this means a puncture or flat tyre.
As of 1st January 2015, a faulty TPMS sensor was classified as an MOT failure. Vehicles manufactured after 2014 have a TPMS as standard.
During a check, the technician will inspect each sensor, measuring its functionality. Unfortunately, broken or faulty sensors cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
Why Is Tyre Pressure Important?
Flat tyres or low tyre pressure increases tyre wear, reduces grips, and lowers fuel efficiency. More contact with the road surface increases rolling resistance, which is the cause of tyre wear. It also means your vehicle consumes more fuel to overcome the higher level of friction.
Correcting your tyre pressure lowers the risk of blowouts or accidents, and it improves vehicle handling and stability. Not only is that safer, but it’s more cost-efficient as you’ll spend less money on fuel and tyre replacements.
