Tread Depth Tread depth must not fall below 1.6mm over the central three quarters of the tread width, around the entire circumference. This is the authorised legal limit. Below this depth, there is a greater risk of aquaplaning and a greater braking distance is required on wet surfaces. To avoid accidents, regularly check the state of your tyres and do not hesitate to change them. The requirements in the UK are that the grooves of the tread pattern of every tyre fitted to a vehicle shall be of a depth of at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three-quarters of the breadth of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
